Setting Up Shop

First posts are always extremely awkward; I’ll try to make this one less so.

Let’s start with the basics: I started a blog. There. The secret’s out and it’s there for everybody on the World Wide Web to see. I’m secretly praying that my mother or my close friends won’t see this and judge me, but that’s highly unlikely. I dug my own grave, and now I have to… well, lie in it. My business is going to be flying around for everyone to see.

Jesus…why did I do this again? This is starting to seem like a not so good idea.

…Why don’t we talk about the title instead? Yeah, that’s a pretty safe bet.

I named my blog “A Dream and a Laptop” for a reason that goes beyond it sounding deep and thoughtful. It’s symbolic. How? Think of it this way:

Everyone has dreams. Some people want to be scientists, doctors or lawyers. Some people want to be celebrities like Justin Bieber, or the ever infamous, Miley Cyrus, who’s currently twerking her way to stardom. Some may even aspire to be wealthy CEO's of fortune 500 companies that screw over their workers and receive big fat bonuses for doing so. (…Off topic? Yeah, off topic. I'll save that for another time.)

I dream of being an author. Not the next J.K. Rowling or anything, but, yeah, an author. I like writing novels, and stories and swaggerful blog posts like this one. Having a cookie cutter job is definitely not for me; I can’t even remember to do my homework, so working in the cooperate world seems like a long shot.  Being an author is just the right fit.

…And that’s where the problem comes in.

Everybody (mamas included) wants to be a writer. Seriously if you don’t believe me, check out all the sites out there that are filled with writers. There’s Fiction press, Fanfiction, Wattpad, Figment, Archive of Our Own, Sparknotes…so many sites filled with so many dreamers. Everyone’s blabbing about writing advice and character building and dialogue, and there are hundreds of publishing scammers lurking around, preying upon unsuspecting literary fools.

Now look at the New York Times Bestsellers list, and see how many people are on it. Ouch, right? There are probably millions of us out there who want to write, but only a few of us will make it, and what will happen to the rest of us? Will anyone even care if we fail? Probably not, since writers are a dime in a dozen these days.

So do I even have a chance? I’m only a teenage girl; my only tool is my laptop (and my brain, if you want to include that). Am I special enough to wind up among hard-hitters like James Patterson and Stephen King? Only time will tell, and until then, I’m going to share my experiences with you, from the good, to the bad, to the absolutely hideous. I’ve chosen to include you on my private but awesome thoughts as I plow on to keep the dream alive.

Doesn’t that make you feel special?

I'll be updating every week, probably on Fridays when school's out and I have nothing else to do. Hopefully you'll like and actually care about what I post, but I won't make any promises about the content. Oh, and I have something else in store for you: a playlist! I’ll do one every week, to kind of set the mood/just for kicks. *Happy Dance*. Listen if you dare, and don't forget to subscribe!
